Ambassador Arikana Chihombori-Quao
A Visionary Leader for Africa and Its Diaspora
Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao is a distinguished medical doctor, activist, and a passionate advocate for Africa and its diaspora. Born in Zimbabwe and having emigrated to the United States in 1977, she embodies a unique blend of medical expertise and diplomatic leadership. As the founder and CEO of Bell Family Medical Centers, she dedicated nearly three decades to practicing family medicine in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, making a significant impact on her community’s health.
Dr. Chihombori-Quao served as the African Union’s Permanent Representative to the United States from 2016 to 2019, fostering relationships and advocating for African interests in America. Her tenure was marked by her commitment to addressing healthcare crises in Africa through initiatives like the African Union-African Diaspora Health Initiative, where she mobilized health professionals from the diaspora to support health development on the continent.
An ardent scholar, she holds a bachelor’s degree in General Chemistry, a master’s degree in organic chemistry, and a Doctor of Medicine degree from Meharry Medical College. Her extensive education laid the groundwork for her influential career and her groundbreaking work in healthcare and development.
A key focus of Dr. Chihombori-Quao’s advocacy revolves around the historical implications of the Berlin Conference, which she believes has contributed to ongoing challenges in Africa. She passionately lectures on the need for unity among African states and the diaspora, emphasizing the importance of collaborative development efforts.
In 2019, she launched the ambitious “Wakanda One Village Project,” designed to create centers of excellence in Africa that will encompass advanced healthcare, infrastructure, and economic opportunities, rekindling hope and engagement for people of African descent around the globe.
Recognized for her tireless dedication, Dr. Chihombori-Quao has received several accolades, including the “Women of Excellence Award” from the African Union Summit in 2015 and recognition from leaders like Nelson Mandela for her contributions to the African cause.
Through her inspiring journey as a physician, diplomat, and entrepreneur, Ambassador Arikana Chihombori-Quao continues to pave the way for a brighter future for Africa and its people, her work serving as a beacon of hope and a call to action for unity and empowerment across the globe.
